Not that we’re complaining…but most boutiques you walk into will, in fact, will be filled with associates trying to sell you on what they think is cool. Thankfully, though, they are usually right. And we buy. (Come on tax return!)
But one step inside Karan Dannenberg Clothier, and you will feel a difference. That’s because Karan Dannenberg and her team of highly regarded (not to mention tried and trusted) stylists-cum-staff are there to help you get what you want, and achieve the look you are dreaming of. Think of it less like a sales person, and more like a personal wardrobe consultant, one that actually wants your approval rather than the rest of the critics out there.
“I buy for my customers, for their lifestyles. For work, play events etc. Our special order business is about 1/3 of what we sell and not a lot of stores do special orders that are literally cut for them. Our gift wrap is beyond gorgeous and we help families, husbands, moms, etc with all their gifts.”
Today, in the place of the makeshift boutique Karan used to run from her own home stands a physical store, so that-luckily-the rest of us can finally capitalize on Karan’s expertise. It makes us wonder, how on earth did the idea of a boutique owned by a stylist not scream our names before??
“My parents were great dressers also and I started dressing up when I was 4 years old. I am an amazing stylist. I used to sell travel wardrobes out of my house and basically dressed people and put them together for their trips. So everyone knew me for referral as Karan Dannenberg. When it was time to name the store…it made sense as I am a Clothier.”
And so birthed Karan Dannenberg Clothier, followed by what Karan calls “an exceptionally loyal clientele.” Karan graciously offered us some of her very best advice from the inside:
In your opinion, having been a wardrobe consultant, what makes a person’s style stand out?
“When they are comfortable with who they are and they feel good about what they are wearing. Not being afraid to step out a little and take a risk.”
What three mistakes are most women are making in their wardrobe today?
“-Trying too hard to look younger.
-Trying to always dress for the man or husband.
-Not trusting professionals like myself to advise them!”
Ouch. But it’s this honesty with the world of fashion that makes Karan such a stellar stylist. In fact, it’s safe to say that Karan is as in love with her Seattle shoppers as they are with her services. It’s always a daring venture for a fashionista such as Karan to take on the challenge of styling a budding city like Seattle. But according to her, looks like we’re coming up roses.
“Well I can only speak for my customers…They are not afraid to look hot and be the best dressed at any function. Most of the time they are!”
But roses aren’t the only thing headed to Karan Dannenberg Clothier this season. Not even our annual incessant spring showers are going to be keeping Karan from decking us out in bright hues.
“We follow Europe with trends and I think it is exciting. This year fur has been a huge trend again. People love the colored collars, trims on sweaters and coats. Color is what we are known for; most stores play it safe with neutrals, but we do BIG BOLD COLOR ALWAYS! So I’m excited that colored denim is coming in for spring. Lots of strong colors like parrot green, purple, coral, turquoise. I love it!
Color and clothing can change who we are on the outside but feeling good and confident on the inside and loving who we are is always best.”
What are your favorite collections or designers that are sold in your store?
Equestrian design pants. They last for 10 years and who does not like that? Sympli is a favorite out of Canada…cut to order that goes from size 2 to 22, in 22 colors and it washes and travels so well. Franco Mirabelli, my Italian Stallion. He buys all his fabrics in Italy and makes the clothes in Canada. Such good quality. Also Margaret M pants are great for work, carried for years, well priced and washable. We love washable things. Janell and Britt Rynerson are two wonderful, talented textile designers who are local that make amazing scarves and shawls.”
Well cheers (with a local wine) to that! We know, it all sounds to good to be true. And it possibly is; though it’s been a
wonderful 14 years for her, she can’t do it forever. Her future plans don’t include expanding to your neighborhood, so you’ll need to see her before the future brings Karan’s dreams of travelling the world. We’re guessing she’s going to style herself for the trip…
Speaking of, what’s your signature style?
“I love wearing simple clothes, easy to accessorize. I am the queen of accessorizing. People come to us for those fab pieces. I told my hat maker in NY I wanted a little black hat like Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake wear…it arrived yesterday and I have not taken it off yet!”
